Summer Events in Edmonton
Edmonton is Alberta’s second largest city and Canada’s fifth largest municipality, so it should really come as no surprise that there are plethora of summer events in Edmonton to enjoy!
Probably one of the most notable events taking place in Edmonton this summer is the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015, which started on June 6th and runs through July 4th. The World Cup is a 30 day, 24 nation, 52 match tournament featuring the best women’s soccer players in the world. Edmonton will host 11 matches at the Commonwealth Stadium, with other host cities including Vancouver, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, and Moncton.
Edmonton Summer Festivals
Edmonton is a cultural and educational centre and hosts a year-round slate of festivals; in fact, Edmonton is actually known as “Canada’s Festival City”! Some of the Edmonton summer festivals to check out over these warmer months include:
Edmonton Folk Music Festival: The Edmonton Folk Music Festival began back in 1980 and has grown to become one of the leading folk festivals in the world. This year’s event will be held the weekend of August 6th through the 9th and features artists like Of Monsters and Men and Sinead O’Connor.
Heritage Days: 2015 marks the 40th annual Heritage Festival, a three-day showcase of Canada’s multicultural heritage. August 1st through the 3rd you can enjoy amazing cultural food and creative performances, plus plenty of crafts, artwork, clothing and more!
The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival: The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival takes place August 13th through the 23rd, with the theme “SupercaliFRINGEilistic”. Last year, over 600,000 people showed up to enjoy the street festival in old Strathcona with its buskers, outdoor performers, onion cakes and, of course, the beer tent. This year the event features over 1,600 live theatre performances in close to 50 venues, with a focus on musicals.

There are not only a variety of Edmonton summer festivals to hit this summer, but also some amazing Edmonton attractions to check out! To name just a few:
Fort Edmonton Park: Travel back in time at Fort Edmonton Park, where the original Edmonton has been preserved in all its glory. You’ll experience four distinct eras in Edmonton’s past: the days of the fur trade, as well as the pioneer years of 1885, 1905 and 1920.
Edmonton Valley Zoo: Everyone loves visiting the zoo during the summer, and the Edmonton Valley Zoo does not disappoint! Home to more than 350 animals, every visit is rich with animal interactions!
Sir Winston Churchill Square: There’s always something fun to do at Churchill Square! From shopping, relaxing in the gardens, and a variety of delicious foods to enjoy, you’ll find something for everyone in the family to partake in during a beautiful summer day.
Muttart Conservatory: Inside the striking glass pyramids at the Muttart Conservatory you’ll find innovative botanical gardens as well as live dance, music and fine art showcases. One of the most well-known landmarks of Edmonton, the conservatory features three city-operated greenhouses and public gardens.
