According to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, there are an estimated 100,000 Canadians currently living with multiple sclerosis (MS). Even though there have been many decades worth of research on this disease, the actual cause is still unknown.
MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, attacking the myelin or protective covering of the nerves. The myelin can become inflamed and damaged, which will disrupt transmission of nerve impulses. Common symptoms of MS are fatigue, impaired sensation, vision problems, weakness, tingling, etc. Most often, MS occurs in those between the ages of 15 to 40, and is three times as likely to occur in women as in men.
This disease hit Sentinel close to home back in 2003, when our own Josee Gelinas in the Accounting Department was diagnosed. What started as a small bike team of 4 people (including Josee herself!). Not only do we participate, but Sentinel is also a major sponsor; this will be our 4th year sponsoring the MS Walk and Bike Events in Edmonton and Calgary. This is also our first year sponsoring the Red Deer Bike and Walk and the Fort McMurray Walk.
But in the 12 years Sentinel has been involved in the MS Bike events, we’ve raised approximately $230,000 for MS awareness. Last year alone was one of our biggest fundraising years ever, when we brought in over $23,000 in total funds!
MS Walk and Bike Events in Canada
Sponsoring the MS Walk and Bike events helps provide more money for research and programs offered to those suffering from the disease. Sentinel has approximately 6 people volunteering for the Walks and another 4-6 for the Bike events, as well as a team of around 15 people (depending on the year) participating in the actual Bike event!
The MS Walk and Bike events in Canada have raised $8 million dollars annually for MS awareness. Here’s a list of the MS Walk and Bike events for 2015 that Sentinel is proud to be sponsoring this spring and summer:
Edmonton MS Walk and Bike: 2015 marks the 25th year of fundraising in Edmonton with the 2015 Edmonton Jayman BUILT MS Walk, and is also the 26th Annual Johnson MS Bike Tour from Leduc to Camrose, with bikers riding around 90km per day. The walk takes place on Sunday, May 24th and the Bike event will be held June 13-14th.

Red Deer MS Walk and Bike: The Red Deer MS Walk will be held on Sunday, May 31st and features a 2km and 8.5km walk as well as a 5km and 10km run. The Johnson MS bike tour in Red Deer will be held in late August on the 29th and 30th and will cover a total of between 139km to 151km (depending on the route you choose) through scenic roads in Central Alberta.
