Sentinel Storage is excited to announce the release of our new infographic – How to Have the Ultimate Garage Sale.
Summer is the perfect time of the year have a garage sale! Clear out some of that clutter from your attic, basement, garage and closets and make some extra money to stow away in your savings account, or maybe spend it on a weekend getaway to enjoy the lovely summer weather.
Because many people don’t work on the weekends, Saturday is the best day to have your garage sale. Open bright and early at 7 a.m., and make sure you’ve gone to the bank ahead of time and are prepared with different denominations to make change. A good idea is to price items in quarter and dollar increments to keep making change simple.
Your garage sale should be organized and tidy. Place big ticket items right up front so they are the first thing people see when they walk in. If you have electronics, make sure you have an outlet available so customers can test them out before purchasing. If you have multiple sellers involved in your garage sale, make sure to color code price tags so you know who gets credit for their items at the end of the day.
Be ready to negotiate! Recent polls show that 42% of garage sale shoppers expect to negotiate prices of items. Plus, 43% of customers say overpriced items are one of the biggest turnoffs, along with disorganization (22%), dirty items (19%) and hard to find specific items (14%). In fact, 97% of shoppers will leave your garage sale within two minutes if they don’t see anything they’re looking for.
After your garage sale ends, decide which items you’re doing to donate, and which items you’re going to throw away. Items you decide you can’t part with, or maybe want to hold on to for a future sale, can go into a self storage unit.
