Winnifred Steward is music to the ears for Sentinel Storage

It’s hard to not feel happy when music is playing. 

Most of us understand that. After all, music is often part of significant moments in our lives. Weddings, first dates, long drives with friends, you name it. We associate the songs we hear during those times with the positive memories and hold onto that association afterwards. 

And that makes us happy. 

Individuals with diverse abilities are no different, which is one of the reasons that Edmonton’s Winnifred Steward uses music in much of its programing. 

Sentinel Storage is proud to provide support to the Winnifred Steward music room, which allows them to better serve the individuals that rely on them for support. 

For 70 years, Winnifred Stewart has empowered countless individuals with diverse abilities to discover their goals and dreams. They do that through programing like they provide in the music room. 

Music programing helps individuals with diverse abilities in many ways. It has both physical and emotional benefits. 

Physically, listening to music can lead to a change in heart rate, reduced blood pressure, and improved breathing rates.

When dance is included, music can also lead to improved motor development and a higher level of physical fitness. That, in turn, can help individuals sleep better, have less pain, and just generally feel better.

We’ve touched on the emotional benefits, but on a clinical level music has been shown to reduce depression and feelings of loneliness and isolation. Anxiety is also lessoned. 

Music has been shown to improve memory and is a wonderful therapy tool for individuals experiencing dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease and other memory disorders. It has been shown to fight the effects of such disorders.   

Finally, music helps people have fun with other people! That type of social interaction is so very important and can often get overlooked when designing programs for people with diverse abilities. 

The music programs that Winnifred Steward operate are just one reason why Sentinel Storage is proud to partner with an organization that does some important work in Edmonton and Northern Alberta.
