Sentinel Storage is thrilled to sponsor the Indigenous Relay races at the 2023 Calgary Stampede

July in Calgary can only mean one thing: It’s Stampede time!

For more than a century, cowboys and cowgirls from Alberta and beyond have gathered in Calgary for the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, the Calgary Stampede.  

The 10-day event is hard to define in a universal way. It is a rodeo, cultural exhibition, family event, world class concert and Alberta tradition all wrapped up into one fun-filled experience. There truly is something for everyone and Sentinel Storage is once again proud to be there.  

We are especially excited to be a sponsor of the Indigenous Relay Races at this year’s Calgary Stampede. Sentinel Storage has been honoured to be involved with the Relay Races for several years, as one of the founding sponsors of this important cultural and athletic event.  

If you have never seen an Indigenous Relay Race before, it is hard to fully express just how thrilling this contest is. It features teams of bareback riders racing three laps of the track at breathtaking speed. That’s exciting enough until you learn that there is a twist.  

The rider must change horses after each lap! Yes, you read that right! With the assistance of horse handlers in the exchange zone, the rider must leap off one hose and onto another before completing the next lap.  

It’s incredibly athletic and the crowds love it.  

The relay races also hold deep cultural significance to the indigenous population in Alberta. The origins of the sport can be traced back more than 300 years and are tied into food gathering practices of the Tribes that lived on what is now known as the Canadian Prairies. So, for the aboriginal athletes involved it’s not just a competition. It’s also a deeply felt and significant connection to their past and their ancestors.

It’s for all those reasons that Sentinel Storage is excited to be a part of this wonderful and unique part of the Calgary Stampede.  

Sentinel Storage will also be sponsoring three breakfast events at this year’s Calgary Stampede. As anyone that has been to a Calgary Stampede knows, the free breakfasts are a highlight of the 10 days and we are thrilled to have an expanded role in this tradition in 2023.

Above all else, the Calgary Stampede is a celebration of Alberta’s unique and vibrate culture and as Alberta’s storage leaders, Sentinel Storage is once again thrilled to be a part of this great event.
